About This Event

In this session, we will examine the development of Kashrut in the Torah itself, how it evolved from its origins in the book of Genesis, to its detailed culmination in the books of Leviticus, Chapter 11, and Deuteronomy, chapter 14. Why do the Biblical dietary laws have more verses and instruction than any other Commandment in the Torah? What are the "reasons" for keeping Kosher according to the Torah? What is the more dominant reason for the dietary laws—hygiene or ethics? How did the rabbis add to our understanding and practices of kashrut? Is kashrut still relevant for us today, or is the system largely an antiquated one? Why does the Torah prohibit, for example, eating pork? What is the ultimate purpose for keeping the discipline of kashrut? What are the challenges, ethically and practically, for our practice of kashrut today?
